Address: When Joost sailed to America 1663-he gave his name on the passenger list, as Joost Van(meaning from)Houplynes(meaning Houplines,Flanders) as was the custom in naming in those days. From there the name became Van Oblenus, then VanOblenis ,then O'blenis it took on an Irish spelling by association with the many Irish in N.Y.,in the late 1700's.One author William Hasselbarth-"The HISTORY OF ROCKLAND COUNTY" claims that De Aubigne was the original name and they were Huguenots from France, who fled religious persecution of the protestants, in the later half of the 16th century. |
